HEIC vs JPG: what's the difference?

HEIC stores the same photo in roughly half the space of JPG by using newer HEVC compression, which is why iPhones shoot in it by default. The catch is support: JPG opens on virtually every device, app, and website made in the last 25 years, while HEIC still trips up older Windows PCs, many web forms, and some printers. Is HEIC the same as HEIF?
