Instagram Post Size Guide

Instagram displays feed photos at a maximum width of 1080 pixels. If you upload something smaller it gets stretched (and looks soft); upload something much larger and Instagram downscales and re-compresses it. Resizing to the exact size first gives you the sharpest possible result. The three Instagram feed ratios: • Square (1:1) — 1080 × 1080 px — the classic, safest post • Portrait (4:5) — 1080 × 1350 px — fills the most vertical space in the feed, great for reach • Landscape (1.91:1) — 1080 × 566 px — for wide, cinematic shots How to use this page: • "Fill" crops your photo to the chosen ratio automatically (recommended for posts) • Want a specific crop? Frame it with our Crop tool first, then resize here • Tap "Adjust" to switch between square, portrait and landscape, or enter any custom size

What are the dimensions of an Instagram post?

A square Instagram feed post is 1080 × 1080 pixels (1:1). Instagram also supports 1080 × 1350 px (4:5 portrait) and 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1 landscape). Starting at 1080 px wide keeps your photo sharp instead of being downscaled on upload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for an Instagram post?
1080 × 1080 px for a square post. Instagram also supports 1080 × 1350 px (4:5 portrait, which takes up more screen space) and 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1 landscape).
Why does my Instagram photo look blurry after posting?
Instagram resizes anything that isn't 1080 px wide and re-compresses it. Uploading a photo that is already exactly 1080 px wide avoids most of that quality loss.
Can I post a full portrait photo without cropping?
The tallest ratio Instagram allows in the feed is 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px). Use the 4:5 quick-pick under 'Adjust', and choose 'Fit' if you don't want any edges cropped.
Does this reduce my image quality?
No. We use high-quality resampling, and resizing to the exact display size actually preserves more detail than letting Instagram do it on upload.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device, so your photo is never uploaded or stored.
