US Passport & Visa Photo Requirements

The U.S. Department of State requires a square 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photo for passports and visas. For online and digital applications this means a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels. This tool outputs 600 × 600 px, the universally accepted standard that also prints at exactly 2 × 2 inches (300 DPI). Official requirements (travel.state.gov): • Size: 2 × 2 inches, square, so the height must equal the width • Head height: 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head • Background: plain white or off-white, with no shadows, textures or objects • Taken within the last 6 months, in full color (sRGB, 24-bit) • Neutral expression or a natural smile, both eyes open, facing the camera directly • No eyeglasses (not permitted since November 2016, except with a signed medical statement) • Digital file: JPEG, 240 KB or smaller for online uploads Where you'll use it: • New passport (Form DS-11) and passport renewal (Form DS-82, including online renewal) • US visa applications (Form DS-160) • Diversity Visa (DV / Green Card) Lottery: requires exactly 600 × 600 px and under 240 KB • Global Entry and other Trusted Traveler Program applications Upload your photo, choose "Fit" to keep your whole head inside the frame on a white background, and download a 600 × 600 px square ready to print or upload.

What size should a US passport photo be?

A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) square, which for digital uploads is 600 × 600 pixels on a plain white background. This tool outputs that exact square; it does not measure head height, so follow the State Department's pose rules.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a US passport photo?
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), square. For digital uploads it must be a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, and this tool outputs the standard 600 × 600 px, which also prints at exactly 2 × 2 inches.
My photo is over 240 KB: how do I meet the DV Lottery limit?
The Diversity Visa (Green Card) Lottery requires a 600 × 600 px photo that is 240 KB or smaller. Resize it here first, then shrink the file size without changing the dimensions using our free Compress tool. Open the Compress tool
Can I wear glasses in my US passport photo?
No. Since November 2016 eyeglasses are not allowed in US passport photos, except in rare cases with a signed doctor's statement for medical reasons. Take your photo without glasses.
What background does a US passport photo need?
A plain white or off-white background with no shadows, patterns or objects behind you. 'Fit' mode pads your photo with white to reach the exact square, but for the best result photograph yourself against a real white wall.
Does this work for a US visa or Green Card Lottery photo?
Yes. US visa (DS-160) and the DV Lottery use the same 600 × 600 px square. The DV Lottery also caps the file at 240 KB, so if yours is larger, compress it after resizing. Compress to under 240 KB
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser on your own device. Your photo is never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone. That is true for every tool on this site.
