Indian Passport Photo Requirements (Passport Seva / MEA)

India switched to the international ICAO Doc 9303 standard from 1 September 2025: the passport photo is now 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), replacing the older 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) square format. For online applications on the Passport Seva and mPassport portals, the digital photo must be a JPEG of exactly 630 × 810 px, under 250 KB, on a plain white background. Official requirements (Passport Seva / MEA): • Print size: 35 × 45 mm; digital upload: 630 × 810 px, JPEG, under 250 KB • Background: plain bright white and uniform (the portal auto-rejects off-white or grey) • Head height: 36–38 mm. The face should fill 80–85% of the frame (larger than most countries) • No glasses (now an automatic rejection, even without glare) • No filters, beauty mode or AI smoothing • Recent photo, neutral expression, both eyes open File-size tip: • The portal caps the upload at 250 KB.
