Schengen Visa Photo Requirements
The Schengen visa photo standard is set by the EU Visa Code (Regulation (EC) 810/2009) and the ICAO Doc 9303 standard, so it's the same across all 29 Schengen countries. The photo must be 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall. Official requirements: • Size: 35 × 45 mm; you usually need two identical photos • Face must fill 70–80% of the frame; head height 32–36 mm from chin to crown • Background: plain and uniform, white or light grey, with clear contrast to your face and hair • Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open, looking straight at the camera • Shoulders square to the camera, no tilt or turn • Taken within the last 6 months Good to know: • Because the standard is ICAO-based, the same photo works whether you apply through France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands or any other Schengen state. • Individual consulates and VFS centres can be stricter on details like head size and lighting. How to use this page: • "Fit" keeps your whole head inside the 35 × 45 mm frame on a white background • Frame your head first with our Crop tool for the 70–80% face-size rule
What are the dimensions of a Schengen visa photo?
